My personal opinion.
As it is, this is my first Austen novel. Do not be confused though, almost every movie that has come out based on her life or that of her books has been seen by these very eyes, and for some reason i was worried the books would not be as wonderful as the movies. Crazy reasoning, I am aware, but to my wonderful surprise Northanger Abbey has the ability to make you giggle, cry, and get annoyed with...

An Array of Problems
The Morlands, the Tilneys, and the Thorpes do not get along well as a trio. This is the beginning of many of the conflicts withing the novel.
John Thorpe harasses Catherine everywhere she goes and deceives others into believing odd things about her. While Isabella and John work together to get the Morlands on their side only.
Isabella begins an affair with General Tilney and once that is...
The Mood . . .
The novel goes through two stages. In Bath the mood is not so much gloomy but intriguing and new. Once Catherine arrives to the Abbey the tone becomes darker, probably because more problems start to arise, yet still there is a touch of adventure in all of the novels trials.
A lovely summery . . .
The story begins with Catherine Morland and her family of ten siblings and well to do parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morland. At 17 Catherine is given the chance to go to Bath, England and become a lady, of sorts. To her it is an adventure or a rightful way to begin a life of and intrigue. The Allen’s are her chaperons and once she arrives at Bath her time is not to interesting, after all Catherine...
Growing up, maturing, becoming wiser: whatever one may call it, it is indeed a treacherous journey. In Northanger Abbey the main characters the maturing of the main characters is detrimental to the plot. Catherine will always have a vivid imagination, that is one thing that makes her such a fantastic character, yet her growth comes with realizing that there are some that are better just as they...

Eleanor Tilney
The quiet, and somber younger sister of Mr. Tilney. She is not a dynamic character that evolves completely as Catherine does, but is a good person at heart. She is the heroine that Gothic novels all tried to portray during the time, but instead of being a compelling character she comes off a bit boring. Either way she serves as a convenient chaperon and consequently he happiness leads to that of...
Isabella Thorpe
It seems Isabella is the perfect counterpart to Catherine. While our main character is dreaming up a mysterious present, Isabella is conniving a wealthy future. She may seem good at first, and kind enough to attract the Morlands to her; then again the Morlands are to naive for their own good. She is one of those character that is interested very much on appearances and money.
She lies and cheats...
John Thorpe
This would be the anti-hero of the novel. He tends to “cause Catherine many troubles” and puts i her in sticky situations. Throughout the novel Cathy has two engagements with two men that are complte opisets. John being on the diwn side of the scale, he is not smart about his temper or his lies. He may even be called an antagonist and also a catalyst that alows Cathy to get closer to...
Henry Tilney
He served as the hero and love interest for Catherine. Some may think he is a sexist man, to enthralled with his own ideas but really he serves as a counter part to Cathy’s vivd imagination. Henry takes no nonsense from her but does not hold grudges either. Which makes him a deeper character than originally thought. He is who Catherine ends the up with and he defies his fathers wishes just...
James Morland
Cathy’s plder brother, he is also a dynamic character that grows through similar trials in which his sister is set in. He is a trusting young man, that is keen to falling in love. But not so keen on the vivid ideas of his younger sister. He is somber, and hard working also. Some may say simple minded at first glances, but he grows as a person through time and dilemas. James also cares for...

Catherine Morland
Cathy is a dynamic character from beginning to end. As the protagonist of Northanger Abbey her life is not the most tragic, or adventurous. But it is the voice of the narrator and her vivid imagination that give way to a heartfelt story. As a young girl she is thought to have to little in her to become the heroin that takes over so many novels. Instead, as a surprise to her elders, she becomes...
